There are only a handful of Filipino restaurants I can recommend to friends and visitors in Melbourne, and GJ’s Grill is one of them! Max and I recently visited with our 5-month old daughter and a couple of friends who are interested in learning about Filipino food. We went out for lunch during a mild winter weather in June.
GJ’s Grill has a traditional Filipino menu featuring dishes from the region of Visayas, specifically Bacolod City in Negros Occidental.
I personally haven’t been to Bacolod City having grown up in northern Philippines, but I’ve heard about the specialties this region offer including chicken inasal and piaya (sweet delicacy).
The restaurant is located at the heart of Melbourne city, just across Victoria market in a laneway tucked in an apartment block. It has limited space for prams but we managed to get through by re-arranging some tables.
We ordered chicken, beef tapa and pork lechon. Dishes are usually served with rice, a side dish and the main dish.
We loved the food at GJ’s Grill! If you like to have a taste of Filipino food in Melbourne, this place is a must-try!
