Chulo Bar de Tapas is the most recent addition to bustling Acland Street in St Kilda, opening in August under the leadership of Madrid-born Chef, Pablo Diaz. It has a great atmosphere, perfect for a weekend feast or a quick weekday bite. I first attempted to get a table of 6 with some friends on Saturday night, but they were too popular to seat us. Luckily, I was able to get a table for 2 the following Tuesday.
The waitstaff were all very attentive and friendly, guiding us through the Spanish menu. We started with some delicious Sardines on Rye with Chilli. The oily sardines contrasted well to the spicy chilli. I was left wanting more, but that’s Tapas for you!
Next up was the Prawn, Octopus and Chicken Paella. Let me tell you, this is one of the best paellas in Melbourne. Fragrant rice cooked perfectly with fresh prawns, octopus and tender chicken, with some peppers and smooth aioli added for good measure. The serving was very generous as well. It’s too much for 2 people, and I would recommend sharing this with 3-4 people. The Chef, Pablo served it to us, explaining he’s wanting to make the most authentic paellas in the city.
The “Carne” or meat of the day was Beef Flank. It was served medium (The ONLY way to enjoy a quality steak) Lightly salted and paired with a smooth horseradish cream, this was a real meat treat. Rich and flavoursome, it left me wanting to find the nearest cave and hibernate for the next week!
Chulo Bar de Tapas has a fun bright vibe, delicious food and friendly service. I would recommend it for all those a great seeking Spanish experience in the St Kilda area.
